The Prince Claus Fund organized the presentation of the book My Journey as a Witness by photographer Shahidul Alam (Bangladesh) on 24 January 2012 in FOAM Amsterdam.

Speakers are Shahidul Alam who in addition to being a photographer is writer, activist, and social entrepreneur and Rosa Maria Falvo, writer and curator specialised in Asian contemporary art. After that Bas Vroege, photographer and director of Paradox, will have a public discussion with Shahidul and the audience can ask questions. American Photo magazine selected My Journey as a Witness as one of the 50 best photo books of 2011.

Lucid and personal, My Journey as a Witness has 130 photographs tracing Alam’s artistic career, activism, and the founding of photography organizations. From early images shot in England to photographs of the last two decades in his native Bangladesh, this is a journey from photojournalism into social justice. Alam’s superb imagery is matched by his perceptive accounts, at once deeply intimate and bitingly satirical.

Photographer Rena Effendi (Baku, 1977) creates work that is an eloquent testimony to human dignity and resilience. Rena Effendi is honoured with a 2011 Prince Claus Award ‘for her remarkable portraits of individual lived experiences in zones of silence, for documenting the social impact of rampant, profit-driven ‘development’ and for raising awareness of social realities in contexts that require developmental support.’

The exhibition Lives Behind follows Effendi’s ten-year journey of documenting the struggles and small triumphs of people, mainly living in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Yet the story of the exhibition transcends geographical borders to become a collective portrait of people who have survived isolation, ruin and devastating pollution. Somehow they are maintaining an independent existence despite being caught between an unstable past and a frightening future. Lives Behind provides photographic proof that too many people are stranded in the wake of industrial development, expansion and capitalism.

In the 1950s, the Egyptian revolution made Cairo into the cosmopolitan center of a vibrant society. Can the city once more have that role in the aftermath of today's Arab Spring? Prominent and original photographer Van Leo (1921 - 2002) knew at the time how to capture the zeitgeist with his advanced photography.

On Thursday 29 September 2011 the Prince Claus Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts in collaboration with De Balie, organize an evening related to the work of Van Leo, providing a unique look at the Cairo of the past, but we also look at the current situation and the Cairo of the future.

The Prince Claus Fund participated at the Shanghai Contemporary 2011 at the Shanghai Exhibition Centre from 8 – 10 September 2011. This is the first time the Prince Claus Fund is presented at an art fair.

For the 5th time the Shanghai Contemporary will highlight the work of galleries that promote innovative practices and research and nurture the creative movements that are crossing China and Asia, changing the global cultural landscape. The fair will be held inside and outside the walls of the Shanghai Exhibition Centre, involving galleries, the city's cultural and educational institutions, alternative and independent art spaces, and the most advanced expressions of the city's creative industries and the media.

The photographs of Armenian/Egyptian photographer and 2000 Prince Claus Laureate Van Leo (1921-2002) give a unique insight in the cosmopolitan and vibrant society of Cairo in the second half of the 20th century.
Van Leo also made hundreds of self portraits that were ahead of their time. He was one of the most prominent studio photographers of his time.

This exhibition is organized as a part of the International Art Programme in Amsterdam of the Prince Claus Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts and is curated by Negar Azimi and Karl Bassil, Arab Image Foundation.

The exhibition can be visited from 7 July till 11 November 2011 on Mondays till Fridays from 10.00 hrs till 17.00 hrs in the Prince Claus Fund Gallery, Herengracht 603 in Amsterdam.

Students of Bamiyan Photography projects crossing a small river by Abdullah Shayagan

In the province of Bamiyan, situated in Afghanistan’s central highlands, thirteen young men and women (amateur photographers) from different districts were invited to look at their environment through the lens of a camera.
The exhibition, Fragments of Tradition, Beauty and Hope, shows the results of a workshop offered by the 3rd Eye Photojournalism Center and supported by the Prince Claus Fund. The photographs illustrate the resilience of people in the midst of conflict. These photographs also give a unique and personal insight into the geographic, social and political context of life in Afghanistan and the reconstruction and peace-building efforts that are going on.

The exhibition can be seen from 31 March 2011 until 17 June 2011 in the Prince Claus Fund Gallery at the Herengracht 603, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Exhibitions in the Gallery are free to visits by the public from Monday to Friday from 10.00 hours – 17.00 hours

The Prince Claus Fund and De Nieuwe Kerk organise an evening about contemporary Iranian photography that features guest speaker Malu Halasa and photographer Newsha Tavakolian. Malu Halasa is a journalist and the editor of the book Transit Tehran: Young Iran and Its Inspirations. During this evening, she will present the fascinating beauty and heroic resistance of contemporary photography in Iran, and will interview the young but already renown Iranian photographer Newsha Tavakolian.

The evening will focus on contemporary Iranian photography. Photos will be shown by young Iranian photojournalists and artists, who use their cameras to explore their country’s current state of turbulent social change. These photos reveal a different and burgeoning image of Iran, a country that many westerners mainly associate with ayatollahs and nuclear plans.

Scars & Other Remnants, the first solo exhibition of works by Dinh Q. Lê to be held in the Netherlands, will open on Wednesday 15 December 17.00 at the Prince Claus Fund Gallery. Dinh Q. Lê (born 1968) is considered one of the most important and influential contemporary Vietnamese artists.

The works of Dinh Q. Lê examine genocide, consumerist glitz in disadvantaged places, and the promotion of Vietnam as an idyllic paradise for tourists. The Scars & Other Remnants exhibition in the Prince Claus Fund Gallery will show a variety of his works including South China Sea Pishkun, two photo weavings and the Damaged Genes installation.

Scars & Other Remnants is exhibited at the Prince Claus Fund Gallery from 16 December 2010 till 18 March 2011. The Prince Claus Fund Gallery is located at the Herengracht 603 in the centre of Amsterdam and is open on workdays from 10.00 am till 5.00 pm. Free Entrance.

I produced New Tapestry, a project by KesselsKramer, conceptualized by Christian Bunyan.

The New Tapestry is a modern remix of one of the most spectacular artworks of the Medieval world: The Bayeux Tapestry.

Where the old tapestry shows the news of 1066, the new tapestry will show the news of right now. It is being drawn by artists and illustrators from all over the world and will function as an enormous creative retrospective on our time’s most topical events.

This exhibition was installed in the unexpected space of a former cafe along a major pedestrian thoroughfare in the heart of Brussels. The photographs shown here showcased the highly evocative and emotive fashion spreads commissioned by Vice.

Vice Fashion Photo Expo was on the 24th and 25th October at Galerie Ravenstein, Brussels.

I was working primarily with KarlssonWilker, a design practice from the United States, on their graphical representations of water statistics in a range of 2D and 3D presentations.

I was involved in the production of the Design Center De Winkelhaak's first exhibition for 2008, It's About Time.

This included expo 2030, a group show by 8 designers from different design disciplines (illustration, game design, architecture, lighting, product), the launch of the De Winkelhaak's 100gm Design shop, as well as an open platform for emerging designers in Belgium, the New Yonk Design Platform.

Additionally, I conceptualized and produced a short promotional video for expo 2030 where I interviewed each of the participating designers and provided a glimpse of the ideas and concepts presented in the exhibition.

(project) Noise Singapore 2007 Festival [Jul 07-Jan 08]

Noise Singapore Festival 2007 showcased and promoted the works of emerging creative youth aged 25 and under. As Project Manager, I oversaw the festival exhibition, as well as the mechanics of this youth arts festival which involved Singapore's brightest youth photographers, visual artists, graphic illustrators and musicians.

Noise 2007 presented works by young creatives, and I developed negotiations between the artists, location owners and vendors to create a fresh interpretation of these works for a public audience. This included a 13 day site-specific exhibition encompassing Art, Music, Photography and the Noise Apprenticeships, a series of Noise Festival Concerts, as well as managing the online showcase of the selected works

Moreover, I was involved with the Advertising and Promotions of this festival, as well as the Outreach and Programming aspects of the physical exhibition.

This project allowed me to develop a sense for a very different target audience, whilst maintaining a professional timeline of negotiations, production and programming for the Noise 2007 Festival. Additionally, it was heartening to see a younger, vibrant community who are unafraid to make mistakes and pursue their creative interests.

(project) Singapore Heritage Fest 2007 (May-Jul 07)

The Singapore Heritage Fest 2007 exhibition is an annual project by the National Heritage Board of Singapore and I was tasked to be the Assistant Curator to unearth and share aspects of Singapore's history through anecdotal and personal stories.

In the process of conceptualizing the exhibition, I developed exhibition narratives and researched unique story angles via interviews and collecting information from various archive sources. Additionally, I sourced for interesting artefacts such as a fully reconditioned barber's chair from the 50s, which we integrated with 'live' barber sessions at 1950s prices, and a 60 year old handwritten recipe for kueh lapis, a traditional Peranakan cake.

We integrated some 100 artefacts with interactive exhibition elements, as well as multi-media components to provide a range of sensorial methods to the audience. (I even sourced replica re-productions of childhood games and toys for direct interaction between the audience and the artefacts)

I performed in-depth research into whimsical and almost-forgotten memories of Singapore, and translated this information into exhibits for the public to reminisce and enjoy. It was an excellent opportunity for me to explore interesting stories about Singaporean traditions which have since disappeared, and relay the memories of these to a new audience.

(project) Singapore Biennale 2006 [Jun 05-Jan 07]

I was the Logistics and Locations Manager for the Singapore Biennale 2006 (SB2006), Singapore's inaugural international, multi-venue, contemporary visual arts exhibition.

In my 19 month stint with SB2006, I was responsible for establishing contact and maintaining lines of communication between artists, curators, designers, stakeholders (such as the location owners, partnering government bodies and approving authorities) and the SB2006 Secretariat.

This was a three-fold job as I represented the interests of the artists’ vision, as well as the effective presentation of the works as indicated by the curators/designers whilst managing the interests of the stakeholders.

Furthermore, I had brokered the involvement of all 19 locations of SB2006. Of these, the most rewarding experience for me was with the religious sites; through their various trustees and religious leaders, the exhibition presented a unique situation with artworks existing in and around the grounds of these premises.

Additionally, I streamlined artists’ proposals with local builders’/technicians’/ suppliers’ know-how in order to keep to an effective production timeline. This required me to negotiate solutions to design, construction and presentation issues.

As part of my job, I provided local insights for the visiting artists who had come to Singapore for recces, in preparation for their works for the exhibition. These international artists eventually required various implements and/or had last minute queries, and I worked closely with my colleagues to best fulfil their requests by way of providing artist interns, sourcing for materials, or even simply suggesting places for dinner!

Finally, during the programming of the exhibition, I was in charge of the effective presentation of the works during the 73 day period for a third of the exhibition spaces. I worked in tandem with my colleagues to manage the various groups who visited the exhibition; ranging from private tours for government officials to organised school groups.

This was a truly eye-opening experience as it gave me a wide range of situations where I could balance both the execution of my project management skills whilst exercising my sense of aesthetics, in the professional presentation of the works.

(project) Eco 4 the World [Nov 04-Jun 05]

Back in 2004 when I had just returned from my 5 week exploration of Europe, I worked at Eco4theWorld as a production assistant

I was involved in all stages of production of the globe-spanning pilot and episodic line up for this United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP] partnered magazine television program, which centred around environmental awareness and sustainability.

My responsibilities included research, pre-production, execution of location/studio shoots and assisting in post production.

This was an excellent introduction to the wide and wonderful world of television production - I had the opportunity to work with producers and directors from the UK and the US, managed several shoots in Singapore and I even met Desmond Tutu when we were on our location shoot in Bali!

1) personal namecards

2) presents for friends

3) some manner of expressing my ideas on the clothes i want to wear

I think it's terribly liberating to make stuff that you like...
